Things To Do In Sylva, North Carolina: A Perfect Small-Town Day
Tucked into a valley framed by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Sylva is one of those Western North Carolina towns that feels instantly like home. From craft breweries and creative studios to record shops and riverside parks, there’s more packed into this little Main Street than you might expect.
If you’re planning a visit (or just looking to fall back in love with your hometown), here’s how to spend a perfect day in Sylva.
Start With Breakfast And Coffee
Ease into the day at White Moon Cafe
Begin your morning at White Moon Cafe, a cozy downtown spot that feels like Sylva’s living room. Order a hearty breakfast (we love their avocado toast!) and settle in with a board game and some relaxing music as Sylva slowly wakes up around you. It’s the perfect place to fuel up before a day of exploring and brewery hopping. They have been the winner of the Sylva Art’s District Sandwich Competition for two years in a row- they take their food seriously!
Grab a coffee at Blue Ridge Bootleggers
Once you’ve eaten, stroll over to Blue Ridge Bootleggers for your next caffeine fix. Whether you’re a cold brew person or a latte lover, this is a great stop to grab a to-go cup before you wander through town, browse the shops, or head toward the iconic courthouse steps. They roast their coffee beans in house, so if you’re lucky you can get a nose full of those heavenly roasted beans.
Visit The Iconic Jackson County Courthouse
No trip to Sylva is complete without climbing the hill to the old Jackson County Courthouse, one of the most photographed courthouses in North Carolina. From the base of the grand staircase, you’ll see it perched dramatically above Main Street, watching over downtown. This is now the public library- so you are welcome to go inside and check out the three story library. Dreaming of having your wedding on the courthouse steps? You can! And bonus- if you want to rent out the inside of the courthouse, they offer private rentals for a very reasonable price.
Take your time walking up the steps—both for the views and the photos. At the top, you’re rewarded with a sweeping overlook of the town and mountains beyond. It’s a must-stop for sunrise, sunset, or any time you want that classic Sylva backdrop.

DIY crafts at Carly & Cass
Channel your creative side at Carly & Cass, where you can dive into DIY crafts and hands-on projects. It’s a fun way to slow down for an hour or two, make something with your own hands, and maybe even create a souvenir from your trip. I took my mom here for her birthday, and we had a blast creating some tea-cup planters and painting pottery. They offer lots of other crafts to choose from - lots of fun for kids and adults too!
Treasure hunting at End of Main Vintage Store
If you love thrifted finds and one-of-a-kind pieces, wander into End of Main Vintage Store. You’ll find quirky decor, and nostalgic odds and ends that feel like a little time capsule. From kitchen items, to unique signs, jewelry, mugs and steins, lanterns, and so much more- you never know what you might find. It’s the kind of place where you lose track of time and walk out with something you didn’t know you needed.
Spin records at In Your Ear Music Emporium
Music lovers will want to make a beeline for In Your Ear Music Emporium. Browse shelves of vinyl, band t shirts, tapestries, body jewelry, funky stickers, and maybe pick up a record from a local or regional artist. Even if you don’t have a record player at home, it’s worth a visit just for the atmosphere and nostalgia.
Have a sweet treat at Baxley’s Chocolates
Handmade specialty chocolates, truffles, gelato, and chocolate covered everything- this is a sweet tooth’s dream.
Enjoy Sylva’s Social District
One of the most unique things about downtown Sylva is its social district. You can grab a drink from participating spots and stroll within the designated area, enjoying your beverage while you explore shops, create crafts, or simply wander with friends.
Social district hours are Monday through Saturday 8am-9pm, and Sundays 10am-9pm.
It’s a relaxed, walkable way to experience the town and connect with the local vibe. Check out participating restaurants and stores, and more information here.
Sip Your Way Through Sylva’s Three Breweries
Sylva punches well above its weight when it comes to craft beer. Within a short walk, you’ll find three beloved breweries, each with its own personality and regular events.
Innovation Brewing
Innovation Brewing is a local staple and a favorite hangout for both visitors and locals. With a wide range of beers on tap—plus ciders, wine, and non-alcoholic options—there’s something for every palate, from hopheads to those who prefer lighter, easy-drinking styles. Grab a pint, settle into their laid-back space, and you’ll quickly understand why Innovation is such a cornerstone of Sylva’s brewery scene. They have a food truck outside by the river, The Cosmic Carryout, which has a variety of delicious burgers and fries. Next door is Meatballs Pizzeria, where you can get a wood fired pizza to go and play a round of darts at Innovation.
Don’t miss: Trivia night on Mondays. Bring your smartest friends (or just the ones with the funniest wrong answers) and turn the start of your week into a standing tradition.
Balsam Falls Brewing Co
Towards the end of Main Street, Balsam Falls Brewing Co. offers creative, small-batch beers packed with local flavor. This is the spot to try if half of your group is really into beer, and the other half isn’t. They have 10+ ciders on tap, as well as fruity seltzer cocktails, in addition to inventive IPAs, and seasonal brews that change with the mountain weather. The vibe is warm, welcoming, and full of personality. You can bring your dog onto their covered porch overlooking Main Street.
Their food menu is classic American - burgers, flatbreads, wings, Philly cheesesteaks, Tampa style Cubans, tater tots, cheese curds, beer cheese and pretzels, and fried pickles with spicy ranch. Yum!
Plan your visit around their Tuesday trivia night if you love a good brain teaser with your pint. It’s a lively, social way to meet people and feel like part of the community, even if you’re in town for just a few days. Be sure to reserve your team by emailing them, their tables fill up fast! You can email them at info@balsamfallsbrewing.com
Lazy Hiker Brewing / Mad Batter Kitchen
Lazy Hiker’s Sylva taproom brings hiking culture and craft beer together in the heart of downtown. It’s a great place to unwind after a day of exploring, with a lineup of mountain-inspired beers and a friendly, laid-back atmosphere. Sit out on the patio, swap trail stories, and watch Main Street roll by.
Their food options include a variety of vegan/vegetarian options and rice bowls, as well as delicious pizzas and garlic knots. They are completely dog friendly- so even if the weather is poor, your pooch can come inside to hang out with you.
Mondays are especially fun thanks to music bingo. You’ll swap traditional bingo numbers for favorite songs, making it the perfect low-pressure, high-laughs night out.
Family Time At Bridge Park
If you’re traveling with kids—or just want a quiet place to relax—Bridge Park is your go-to. Located along the creek, it offers green space, an impressive playground, and a covered pavilion that makes it an easy, flexible stop in any weather.
Concerts on the Creek
From May through September, Fridays come alive with “Concerts on the Creek,” where local and regional musicians transform the park into an outdoor music venue from 7-9pm. Pack a blanket, bring a chair, and enjoy an evening of live music under the open sky while the kids run and play nearby. There are food and beverage tents set up, so you don’t need to go anywhere else to fulfill all of your afternoon needs. You can check the calendar of who’s playing and when here.
Move Your Body: Yoga And Dance
Yoga at The Yoga Mill
To balance out all the eating and sipping, drop into a class at The Yoga Mill. This downtown studio is a peaceful retreat where you can stretch, breathe, and reset. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or a curious beginner, a class here is a grounding way to start or end your day in Sylva.
